Does Traffic School Lower Car Insurance? California, Florida and New York Rules

In many states, a traffic or driver improvement course can keep a ticket off your record or cut your premium. Here is how the programs work in California, Florida and New York.

After a ticket, a few hours of traffic school can be one of the best-paying things you do. A single speeding ticket raised full-coverage premiums by 28% in NerdWallet's 2026 analysis, and that increase usually lasts years. Depending on your state, a course can keep the ticket from counting against you or earn a direct discount. Here is how three of the biggest states handle it.

Two ways traffic school helps

  • Masking or withholding the ticket, so it doesn't count as points or doesn't appear on the record insurers see (California, Florida).
  • A direct premium discount for completing an approved course (New York's PIRP).

California: traffic violator school

California courts explain that completing a licensed traffic school keeps an eligible conviction confidential on your driving record. Key rules from county court guidance:

  • One per 18 months. Only one conviction in any 18-month period can be kept confidential, counted from violation date to violation date, not from when you attend class.
  • Eligible offenses only. Courts commonly require a valid license, a one-point infraction, no alcohol or drug charge and no speeding far over the limit (some courts set the cutoff at 25 mph over, others at 26).
  • Commercial drivers follow different rules.
  • Insurance: courts note that if you are eligible and skip traffic school, your auto insurance may be adversely affected.

Florida: Basic Driver Improvement (BDI)

According to FLHSMV, many drivers can elect a Basic Driver Improvement course to have points withheld:

  • Deadline: elect the course within 30 days of the citation by notifying the clerk of court and paying the election fee.
  • Limits: once in any 12-month period, and no more than eight times in your lifetime (the lifetime limit rose to eight on July 1, 2024).
  • Exclusions: drivers with a commercial driver's license and drivers cited for 30 mph or more over the limit can't elect it.
  • Bonus: FLHSMV says eligible drivers may also get an 18% reduction in citation fees.

New York: Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)

New York offers a different deal: a DMV-approved PIRP course earns an insurance discount, whether or not you got a ticket.

BenefitWhat New York DMV says
Insurance discount10% off the base rate of your auto and motorcycle premiums each year for three years
Point reductionUp to 4 points, only for violations in the 18 months before you finish the course
FrequencyPoint reduction once per 18 months; retake the course every 36 months to keep the discount
Who gets the discountThe principal operator on the policy
FormatClassroom (320 minutes), online or other approved formats

The DMV is clear about the limits: the course doesn't remove a violation from your record, doesn't prevent mandatory suspensions (such as for DWI or three speeding tickets in 18 months) and doesn't stop rate increases caused by violations or crashes. Give your certificate to your insurer within 90 days to have the discount apply from the completion date.

Other states

Many other states offer traffic school, defensive driving or point-reduction courses, and some insurers give their own discounts for completing an approved course. Ask the court that issued your ticket, your state's motor vehicle agency and your insurer what counts.

Before you sign up

  1. Check eligibility with the court or agency before paying for a course.
  2. Watch the deadline, such as Florida's 30 days.
  3. Choose a state-approved course.
  4. Keep your completion certificate and send it where required.
  5. Ask your insurer about any course-completion discount.

Frequently asked questions

Does traffic school remove a ticket from my record?

It depends on the state. In California, completing traffic school keeps one eligible conviction confidential. In Florida, electing the course means points are withheld. In New York, the PIRP course reduces points used for suspension but doesn't remove the violation from your record.

Can I take traffic school for every ticket?

No. California allows one confidential conviction per 18 months, Florida allows one election per 12 months and eight in a lifetime, and New York allows point reduction once per 18 months.

Does online traffic school count?

Often yes, if the course is approved by the state. New York lists classroom, online and other formats for approved PIRP courses. Always choose a course from your state's approved list.

Will my insurer know I took traffic school?

For a New York PIRP discount, you give your insurer the completion certificate. In states where the course masks the ticket, the goal is that the conviction doesn't appear on the record insurers check.
