SR-22 and FR-44 Insurance Guides
What SR-22 and FR-44 filings are, how long your state requires them, what they cost and how to keep them from lapsing.
An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with your state to prove you carry at least the minimum liability coverage the law requires. States usually order one after a serious violation, such as a DUI, driving without insurance or an unpaid accident judgment. Florida and Virginia also use a stricter version, the FR-44, for certain DUI cases.
The rules are set state by state. How long you must keep the filing, when the clock starts and what happens if your policy lapses all depend on where your license was suspended and why. The guides below explain each piece in plain English and link to the official state sources so you can check every rule yourself.
If you are new to this, start with what an SR-22 is and how it works, then check how long your state requires it.
